Located on the eastern slopes of Mount Elgon, the Bugisu region is one of Uganda’s most renowned Arabica-growing areas. Elevations range from 1,500 to 2,300 meters above sea level, with nutrient-rich volcanic soils, regular rainfall, and cool mountain temperatures that promote slow cherry development and deeper flavor formation.
The region lies in the Elgon highlands, bordering Kenya, and is known for its scenic beauty, terraced hillsides, and centuries-old coffee-growing tradition, making it a cornerstone of Uganda’s specialty coffee scene.
Bugisu Arabica is known for its balanced, rich cup with notes of dark chocolate, brown sugar, and dried fruits. Its washed processing method highlights a medium body, mellow acidity, and a smooth, clean finish. Often described as classic and comforting, Bugisu coffees are ideal for brews that demand consistency, depth, and structure. The altitude and microclimate of the Elgon region contribute to its sweet, layered complexity.

Bugisu coffee is grown by smallholder farmers, many of whom belong to long-standing farmer groups and cooperatives like Gumutindo and Budadiri Cooperative Union.
Farmers typically own 1–2 acres and use hand-picking and wet processing methods, often at community washing stations. Coffee farming in Bugisu is more than a livelihood—it’s a deep-rooted part of the Bagisu people’s culture, passed down through generations with pride and precision.
